At Complete Wellness Chiropractic, your Denver chiropractor, we pride ourselves in offering the Pettibon System to our patients. The Pettibon Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 by Burl R. Pettibon, which consists of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for the spine's hard and soft tissue.
Pettibon practitioners view the spine as a closed kinetic system made up of hard and soft tissues. The soft tissues-muscles, discs, and ligaments-hold the spine upright in its optimum position for function relative to gravity, while moving it through its expected ranges of motions. In this practice, spinal correction has to involve the entire spine, not just one segment or vertebrae.
According to physiology, the nervous system has five "righting" reflexes that continually send skull and spine positional information. What most people think of as balance, is really sensory input the brain receives from the five righting reflexes, the nervous system and its innate organizing energy organizes and re-organizes the lower spine and posture into displaced or aligned positions in order to keep the skull upright. In other words the body will adjust itself and compensate in order to maintain balance. Over time, these compensation patterns can cause joint compression, muscle pain and even nerve pain such as Sciatic pain.
How do Pettibon practitioners practically apply their science? Pettibon calls for re-aligning the spine so that it can function optimally in its upright position relative to gravity. This is achieved with the patented Pettibon weighting system.
The system consists of specially designed head, shoulder and hip weights that patients wear. The amount of weights and their placement depend upon the spinal displacement that needs to be corrected. Wearing the weights alters the heard's thoracic cage's and pelvis's centers of mass, causing the righting reflexes to send spine correcting sensory input to the nervous system. To balance the body to the weights, the nervous system's innate organizing energy causes some involved spinal muscles to relax and others to contract, thereby repositioning and correcting the spine and posture relative to gravity. Additionally, the weights make the involved muscles do isometric exercises, needed to restore their strength, endurance and balance.
